Charcoal belongs among the oldest drawing tools. Natural charcoal is manufactured from burning willow, vine or other branches in high temperatures without any air. The wood carbonises and each of branches stays in one piece and is ready to be used instantly. The Artificial charred charcoal is manufactured from natural charcoal and a binding agent. It appears in the form of a regular stick or it is a part of a pencil. In comparison to natural charcoal made of willow, it is darker, richer and creates velvet tones of black colour. The grease charcoals can be made even at home with soaking charcoal sticks with vegetable oil.

Charcoal is fast, linear and sensitive tool for drawing. It can create not only strong but also soft line and their flexibility can not be overcome. The character of the line is based on the way of leading the charcoal. If we draw line from the top down, the line is smooth and controlled. On the other side, if we draw the line the other way, the line is deeper and richer. Different tone effects can be also drawn using different techniques with charcoal. The granules of paper are put to use when you do colouring. To achieve soft transitions we can spread the drawing surface with fingers or a paper spread. On the surface is left visible false drawing showing the final picture.
